In this recent episode of Impetus Digital‘s Fireside Chat series, I sat down with Nance Dicciani and Denise Devine, Co-founders of RTM Vital Signs. We explored a range of topics related to continuous ambulatory vital sign monitoring using wearable and implantable devices. Among many other things, we dived deeper into the many use cases, benefits, and barriers to these, as well as Nance and Denise’s professional journeys.

Q: Let’s focus a little bit on what you’re trying to do around supporting the transformation of healthcare. What needs to happen in order for us to get into an ecosystem that has much more of a preventative focus as per what you’re doing at RTM, and for us to be able to move the needle to make this more mainstay and mainstream?
Denise Devine: First of all, we have a good example on the medical side of how that’s already happened, which I’ll talk about in a minute. But just in terms of the big picture, and I think COVID has accelerated this with all the Zooming with your doctor. What has to happen is the insurance companies have to reimburse at a reasonable rate for teledoc calls and for these devices.
We’ve talked to the CEO of a major insurance company in our area, who has said that they’re already working on plans because they have seen, through COVID, the need for and the effectiveness of doing remote monitoring and remote meetings with your doctor. That’s in the ecosystem of the pay system, which really has to happen to make this be very robust.
On the technology side, what we’ve seen in terms of continual monitoring, and this is another thing that got me very excited about RTM, is that Dr. Joseph is quite an expert in diabetes and continuous glucose monitoring and he really did contribute a great deal to the technology for the glucose monitor, which completely changed the standard of care for diabetics. His concept was to do the same thing for blood pressure, to the extent that we can continually monitor blood pressure so that doctors can adjust medication in real-time. We can definitely prevent cardiac events and keep the costs down in the system….
