In the latest episode of Impetus Digital‘s Fireside Chat, I had the pleasure of talking with Yianni Serpanos, Founder & CEO of Coreplus and HealthTechX. We discussed a variety of topics, including how COVID-19 has affected the uptake of telehealth among allied health professionals in Australia and worldwide. Yianni also provided his tips for success when it comes to healthcare providers involved in telehealth or other digital health solutions. Further, we dived into the many events and healthcare innovations that HealthTechX spearheads, the barriers preventing patients and providers from embracing digital health innovations, Yianni’s podcast, and much more.

Q: Tell us a little bit about your journey with starting Coreplus, why you selected the audience that you did, and what your objective was in the first place?
A: I knew that I wanted to do more in healthcare, and I had some friends and family involved in various disciplines within the allied healthcare sector. I was fortunate enough to meet a practicing psychologist who was quite innovative for his day. He was not practicing out of a dedicated location or a clinic. He had chosen to hire space around Melbourne and that meant that he could actually be closer and more convenient to his clients in terms of providing that service. He was itinerant, I think it’s fair to say, and one of the first problems that he had was carting around a whole bunch of paper files. He needed an “anywhere, anytime” healthcare record. With the emergence of cloud around that period of time, there was an opportunity to architect an “anywhere, anytime” healthcare record, and support him with his endeavors.
He was the archetype customer, he was the first real-world persona. He guided the productization initially beyond the “anywhere, anytime” healthcare record, and then we started to realize that he also had other needs that related to the way that he administrated, the relationship with these clients, and also the relationship he had with various departments and payers here in Australia. That kind of led us down that particular path. From that point onwards, we started to pick up some word of mouth and that started to elicit some different types of healthcare practitioners that started to engage with the platform. But our longer-term vision was always inspired by the business analysis at the time, which really showed that there weren’t any fit-for-purpose systems that had been built or architected in the cloud, to be able to deal with telehealth services.
Having in mind that there was a ton of money, and it continues to be to this day, as well as time and effort already invested in general practice in hospitals, in pathology, in kind of the established pillars of medical healthcare. But there didn’t seem to be a lot happening in the mental health field, the physical therapies, and then the nutritional health and wellness side. There were a variety of reasons that just converged together. There was a problem to solve. It just made so much business sense. It was a wide-open market opportunity. There was nobody really playing in that space. There were just all these boxes that got ticked as to why it made sense to actually move into the allied health sector.
