In this thought-provoking episode of Impetus Digital‘s Fireside Chat, I sat down with Myriam Prescott, Head of Ethics, Risks and Compliance – Oncology, Novartis Canada. We dissected the importance of effective patient engagement and strong compliance & monitoring programs. We also dived into the legal and ethical considerations around novel digital technologies, patient data ownership, remote trials, and much more.

Here is a sneak peek of our conversation:

Q: Do you foresee there being a future where we have different versions of collaboration, different understandings of intellectual property (IP) and discovery? What is that going to look like in the future?

A: I think that’s going to be changing, as well as our access to data. There are so many aspects related to data. I’m thinking that, for my function, for the legal function, for the data privacy function, not only in Pharma but in every business, data bring a lot of value. You are able to go deeper into the future value that you will bring from clinical trials to the market. I think it’s really key, and we have to work a lot to understand how impactful data are, not only from a company perspective but also from a patient perspective. Our first important objective is to protect personal data, but we also need it. It’s a very challenging situation.

It’s key for the next couple of years that we are able to have the capabilities to do the right analysis. Also, we need to make sure we are building really strong data privacy protection because many provinces in Canada are changing law regulations and the Commissioner will have more and more power. The fines will be much higher, and we can see that coming. Again, it’s going to create a challenge in the way we are working right now versus all the new technologies that we want to bring in, that bring value to how patients can manage their own treatments.

In my perspective, partnering with the healthcare system is behind the evolution of where this should be in 2021 in terms of patient management with new tools. It’s a lot of work that we will have to perform in that area…
