Engaging Patients “Just-In-Time” with Machine Learning

Omri Shor, Co-founder & CEO of Medisafe, sat down with me for an in-depth discussion around the role of digital therapeutics in advancing and supporting the patient journey. Among many other things, we explored how new digital health tools are driving deeper engagement for patients and why personalization of the patient journey is essential (and how to achieve it).

Here is a sneak peek of our conversation:

Q: For example, I am a theoretical pharmaceutical company and I am launching a new best-in-class diabetes medication for patients. I approach Medisafe, what is my conversation with Medisafe going to be about, and how is your platform going to help me with my product launch?

A: Most of the pharma companies that work with us are actually going to be more in the specialty space but I’ll use your example.

The conversation would be mainly for you to understand what is the role of digital therapeutics within pharma. “What am I trying to achieve? I am trying to get my patients to be well supported. I’m trying to provide them with the right set of tools to manage our patient journey from the beginning through the entire process. I want to collect real-world evidence and data in a personalized and de-identified way but I want to get this data and understand key trends and what I need to do. Eventually, happier, engaged patients would lead to the fact that they will persist on their medications for a longer period of time. They will adhere to their medications.”

Many people don’t know that, but similar to my father, 700,000 people a year suffer in emergencies due to mismanagement of medications. In the US alone, every four minutes, an American dies due to mismanagement of medications. In the general US healthcare ecosystem, we lose roughly $300 billion a year due to this issue.

What we’re really trying to do is to arm various players across the ecosystem with the right set of tools. After you understand what are we trying to achieve, you will then work with us to understand the patient journey; from the moment that the patient got diagnosed to the prescription, getting access to the drug, and taking the first dose. From that point forward, how do we manage our patient engagement throughout this entire journey?
